What to Expect
Initial session
We want to get to know your child’s authentic self and will take the time to build their trust, learn about their interests, and explore their support needs. We’ll help them feel comfortable in sessions and make some informal observations as we play and chat, as well as possibly complete a brief screener assessment. This first session is the beginning of our journey with you and is focused on building a relationship with your child and family and learning about your values and hopes for your child. It also provides important information to guide which formal assessments might be useful.
Assessment session(s)
Based on information gathered in the initial session and through your case history form and reported concerns, formal assessment may take place over one or more subsequent sessions. Assessments play an important role in understanding your child’s strengths and areas of need in more depth, and can help to guide therapy planning. Assessment is followed by a comprehensive report (billed separately).
We are mindful that most assessments are neuronormative in nature and centred around neurotypical development and skills. This is something we take into thoughtful consideration when selecting, administering, and interpreting assessments.
goal-setting & therapy planning session
After getting to know your child and exploring their areas of strength and need through our initial and assessment sessions, we will schedule a 30-minute parent-only session with you to establish some meaningful goals for therapy. We will create a plan together that documents what you want to get out of therapy, what approach and strategies we’ll use, and how we’ll collaborate and work together with your child’s team.
1 hour of non face-to-face time will be billed for the therapy plan to be completed and sent to you. This time will be used to establish specific objectives related to your child’s goals, conduct any necessary research into the approaches and strategies to be used, and plan your child’s upcoming sessions.
Therapy sessions
After assessment, therapy sessions will provide strengths-based, neurodiversity-affirming therapy that is focused on authentic play and connection. Sessions will incorporate fun learning opportunities in a supportive environment to help your child reach their goals. We will follow your child’s lead and help them celebrate their strengths, build their skills, and advocate for their support needs.
